The Days I Knew by Lillie Langtry The Days I Knew by Lillie Langtry Feb. 02, 2012 $4.99 84678 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
From www.lillielangtry.com Lillie married Irish landowner Edward Langtry in 1874. Some say that the attraction to Edward was because of his yacht and that he insisted he take her away from Jersey and set up home in London. Lillie did not begin her stage career until several years later after her husband had become bankrupt. She also had a daughter who was born in 1881, Jeanne Marie Langtry (who married Sir Ian Malcolm of Poltalloch in 1902, had four children, and died in 1964), and whose father was definitely not Lillie's husband. The child's actual father was reportedly Lillie Langtry's lover Prince Louis of Battenberg (later 1st Marquess of Milford Haven, 1854-1921), who married Queen Victoria's granddaughter Princess Victoria of Hesse and the Rhine in 1884 and became father of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the last Viceroy of India, and grandfather of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. A recent biography of Langtry suggests that another of her lovers, Arthur Jones, may have been Jeanne Marie's father, though Prince Louis's son, Lord Mountbatten, always maintained that his father was the one. Lillie's heyday as a society beauty culminated in her becoming a semi-official mistress to the Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria's son Albert Edward ("Bertie"), the future king Edward VII. Other lovers included wealthy Britons Robert Peel and George Baird. Among her friends were the Irish writer Oscar Wilde and the American artist James McNeill Whistler. She was for a time the manager of the Imperial Theatre and also manufactured claret at her 4,200 acre (17 km²) winery in Lake County (northern) California, which she purchased in 1888 and sold in 1906. In 1887 Lillie became an American citizen, and divorced her husband the same year in California. In 1899, she married the much younger Hugo Gerald de Bathe, who would inherit a baronetcy, and became a leading owner in the horse-racing world, before retiring to Monte Carlo. She died there in 1929, and was buried in the graveyard of St. Saviour's Church in Jersey - the church of which her father had been rector.

Vanessa's Choice by Sonya Artis Vanessa's Choice by Sonya Artis Dec. 06, 2011 $3.99 25 words Sample 10%
Author bio:
I’ve made so many mistakes in my lifetime I sometimes wonder why God keeps showing me favor. But time and time again, no matter what my transgression is, He keeps loving and keeping me. My name is Sonya Artis. I currently reside in Grandview Missouri with my youngest daughter. My first book ‘Vanessa’s Choice’ speaks on the pain of life from a reckless young adult woman’s view. My story is a true one, based on my life. Vanessa’s Choice outlines how the ability to make your own choices is not as easy as some think and for some of us, when you make your first major wrong choice, you easily spiral out of control and keep that action going when you don’t have people in your life that love you and want better for you. With Vanessa’s Choice you will walk with me through the immaturity of having premarital sex with different partners, and ending up pregnant for the second time, by a different man than my first pregnancy and dealing with abortion, adoption, partying, fighting and all around pain. My book is my testimony and it is about a part of my life that was haunting me. It depicts a crazy time when I thought I was cool, and doing nothing right. It’s crazy the things we do in our short lifetime here that we think are ‘cool’ or ‘in’ at the time. It’s not until we either are confronted by ‘right’ or end up in a situation where we have to explain ourselves that we regret those cool times. I’ve had more of those times than I can count. I thought it was ‘cool’ to start drinking at age 17. After all, I was on my own. I thought it was ‘cool’ to live with a guy that was not my husband at age 18 and have his child just three months before I left him. I thought it was cool to be one of the hottest hip hop dancers of my time….in my area. I thought it was cool to hang out with the drug dealers, and the boosters. I wished I could drink as much as my friends, or even like smoking weed so that I could do that with my ‘friends.’ Yeah, I thought all the things I did was fun. It wasn’t fun however to wake up in the mornings sick and throwing up in front of my child because I drank too much the night before. It wasn’t fun to wake up next to my boyfriend and not remember the night before. It wasn’t fun to have more fights than I can count and have charges pressed against me. It wasn’t fun to go to jail for shoplifting when I decided for the first time to do what my ‘friends’ were doing, and it definitely was not fun giving up my child for adoption because I was too into the other fun things to know how to handle a grown up situation correctly. My goal in life now is to share my testimony with others and try to prevent any lady or man- young or old from continuing to make mistake after mistake. God has given us the ability to make our own choices and because of that, we sometimes feel comfortable with doing the wrong thing. The problem is not God forgiving us….once we are saved, He always gives us our forever second chances. But once we firmly know right from wrong, and we still make the choice to choose the wrong route, we really start to feel the hurt of our wrongs not only from the people we are surrounded by that want us to do right and pray for us constantly to do right, but from our own conscience that screams at us from the pits of our stomachs that we knew not to do the wrong we just committed. To go from being a person that has no real caution in their life, doing pretty much what you want when you want, and having like minded friends, to becoming a true Christian is like going from walking aimlessly in the dark with obstacles all around you to having bright lights shining all around you at all times. I had to let go of so many things and people when I got saved; but oh, how it was worth it. I went from having friends that wanted to party 24/7 to my church family that just wanted to love me 24/7. I went from thinking all the fun I could have was in the streets to finding out, I could have more fun than I ever imagined being a Christian! I went from wanting to fight to wanting to love and I went from having gossiping trouble making friends to friends that pray for the gossiping trouble makers! The most important thing for me though was going from having friends that judged me for everything I did, to having a family that only wanted the best for me and truly did not care about what I did in my past! When Vanessa’s Choice first came out I was deeply embarrassed that my church family would find out I was not the person they all thought I was. Here I am a saved leader of my church writing about how I gave up my child for adoption. Writing about having a sexual relationship with a ‘boyfriend’ that apparently came before my child. How drinking, dancing and fighting were more important than working, going to worship and being a mother. I wrote the book to take some of the kinks out of my own heart, not knowing that my story would bring others to me. Never thinking that others have stories that although vary, are not too different from my own. Hearing how my story has helped others make tough decisions, and how it has prompted other Christians not be ashamed of their past but use their past experiences to help others has been simply AMAZING. I went from being embarrassed about my story to now looking forward to sharing it – if it will help just one more person turn to Jesus or help one more Christian want to share their testimony to help someone else. As God continues to push me higher and lead me in the way of being a helper to non Christians I am finding out, we all have a past. Some of us are living in our worst moments right now, but it is alright. We ALL have valleys but if you pay attention you will find God always puts references in your valley for you to utilize and they will help you out of that valley and pull you out onto level ground. Once you are saved and you believe that Jesus is the son of God, died for us and our transgressions and rose on the third day you will find that trials and tribulations come and go easier and faster. You won’t stress as much and you will wonder….why did it take me so long to find this love.

Author bio:
Shahnaz Khari was brought up in a wealthy British Pakistani household where she wanted for nothing. Her problems started when, at the age of 12, she was forced to give up school to become cook and housemaid to her brothers in her parents’ absence. She never went back to school. For Shahnaz, one nightmare followed another. At 18 she was forced into an arranged marriage with a man whom she quickly discovered to be a violent and abusive drug addict who stole her money and jewellery to buy drugs. No sooner had she begun to recover from that ordeal than her parents made her marry a teenage boy who turned out to be controlling, sadistic and equally violent. There followed a traumatic pregnancy and stillbirth, violence and abuse from her family and months of imprisonment in her own bedroom before she won her freedom by smuggling a message to the police in her daughter’s schoolbag. Persuaded back home and then tricked into going to Pakistan with her family, where she endured yet another arranged marriage, she managed to escape from the house while everyone was at prayer and fly back to London. Her family persuaded her to make a brief return to Pakistan by saying her mother was seriously ill, but when she arrived she was beaten up, threatened with shooting and drowning, stripped of her possessions and imprisoned once again, all because she had asked for the freedom to make decisions for herself and her daughter about their lives. Eventually Shahnaz managed to return to the UK with her third husband, build a new life with him and her daughter and study for a career. She is now a social worker specialising in child care. Now Shahnaz (she has used a pen-name to avoid embarrassment for her family) has written her extraordinary, compelling story of survival.

Author bio:
At nineteen, I was a drug addict and alcoholic when I nearly died in a car bombing. My book is called “It cost me an arm and a leg”. I'll let you guess why. This is the true story of how I found my way from a middle class upbringing into addiction, violence and crime. How easily I got mixed up with motorcycle gangs, criminals and almost died more times than I can remember. In 1987, at thirty years old, a culmination of events brought me to recovery. CA, NA, and AA meetings were my salvation those first few years I was clean. I turned my life around. I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 1994. Five years later, I was successfully treated for it but became acutely depressed while taking Rebetron. Under any other circumstances, I would have refused anti-depressants but this was different. The hepatitis is "cured" and I am still on Paxil. For twenty four years, I have developed coping skills I never had the chance to learn because I started doing drugs so young. I grew up and took responsibility for my life, entered therapy whenever I felt stuck, got married, made new friends and learned to sing. I am still married, have two dogs and live in suburbia. I struggle with health issues but life is good. I did it and so can my readers. Note: The names have been changed to protect me.

After being widowed by a well-known Cleveland socialite, Ann Lloyd continued a journey with world travel escapades. In the early 1950’s she and her second husband were disillusioned with the decadent social scene, ventured out and discovered the tiny, rarely traveled “Lost Island of the Caribbean.” Within six months we had completely packed up, with our three young children, leaving the old life and friends behind in Ohio, to pioneer a completely new world in the Bahamas. The scuba diving resort that we built and managed for fifteen years became quite well known. Widowed a second time after her husband’s fatal plane crash, she moved to Florida. Here the saga continued with the third husband, the purchase of a new tavern business, and bouts with substance abuse. After six years of sobriety, thanks to a Twelve Step program, she had a complete personality change which enabled her to face a bizarre illness with a positive approach towards healing. This was not the end of her life but a new beginning from which she gained much knowledge about herself, and finally the spiritual growth to continue with a happy and peaceful life. Through those years of recovering with her intuition more finely tuned, she recorded even more intense observations and amazing insights during encounters with unusual humans and animals.

Well, I finally got my fairy tale ending, married to a slightly grumpy Englishman and I couldn't be happier. When it comes to my personality I'm caring & generous... And extremely talkative. I'm very stubborn and have a hot, fiery temper. I live my life by my emotions & let my heart lead my way which sometimes gets me into trouble. Punished for Purpose by Lauri Burns Punished for Purpose by Lauri Burns Feb. 27, 2011 $8.99 191320 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
Growing up in Long Island, New York in an upper class Jewish family, who would have ever guessed my life would turn out as it did. I had everything a kid could want. It was perfect. My mom told me I was around 3 when the beatings began. Whenever my dad was in “a mood” he would come looking for me. I was like the punching bag that most guys keep in the garage. As a child, I believed I was a witch in a past life and that the beatings were payment for my sins, hence the name of my book, Punished for Purpose. I failed to bond to people. The abuse, coupled with the fact that no one was protecting me, solidified my belief that people could not be trusted. I was 13 when my mom left us in search of a new life. That was when my father’s violence escalated. One day he began to beat me failing to notice that I had a friend in the house. Then everything changed. Afraid that he would get in trouble, he hid a handgun and told the police I threatened to kill him with it. I was committed to a mental institution for the criminally insane. I tried to kill myself several times. In order to protect me from myself, they tied me to a bed in a straight jacket in a solitary room and kept me drugged. By the time I was released, the damage was done. On a suicide mission, I spiraled. I was made a ward of the court and sent from home to home. Unable to rebound from my circumstances, I started shooting intravenous drugs at the age of 16. The drugs helped to push the memories away. I gave birth to my daughter when I was 19, but even my love for her couldn’t save me. On January 5, 1987 after being arrested for prostitution several times, I was taken into the woods by two gunmen and raped severely. Not being able to endure one more beating, I begged them to shoot me. That night my life was saved by a stranger and within 24 hours I was in a safe shelter. It was there that I began talking about my childhood. I learned that I had protected my father at the price of killing myself. Slowly but surely I began to see that I had value and that ‘maybe’ my dad was wrong. Two years later, at the age of 26 I took in my first abused teenager. I knew at that time this was my calling. It was around that time that a man who really believed in me asked me this question “Lauri, Do you know the difference between you and Gandhi, Mother Theresa, and Martin Luther King Jr?” I was intrigued. He said, they didn’t just think about doing things, they did them. That’s it. He also said “If you put fleas in a jar and close the cover, they will hit their heads on the lid. After a few hits they will jump short. When you release them from the jar, they will continue to jump “short." No matter how long they’re out of the jar, they will never return to their full potential for fear of hitting their heads. Lauri, you are living your life like you are still in the jar.” That was when I lifted the lid off my life and starting believing everything was obtainable. I let go of all preconceived limitations. I had a GED education, no practical job skills and within a few years I was earning well over 6 figures and I had five abused teenagers living in my home. Today I am an executive at a Fortune 100 company, an author, an international speaker, I have been a mother to 30 abused teens and I have a nationwide foundation for street kids. I realize now I was never being punished for sins in a past life, but rather prepared for the most amazing life imaginable. It is the memories from the darkest times of my life that I must draw from to help the children that enter my door. If I had to do it all over, I wouldn’t change a thing. Lauri Burns is a corporate executive at a Fortune 100 company, an inspirational speaker, a mother to over thirty troubled foster children (drugs, prostitution, cutters, eating disorders and behavioral disorders) and the founder of The Teen Project, for homeless youth, which she established in response to her overwhelming feeling that no matter how many teens she fostered, it was never enough. She is a part of Oprah’s Angel Network and has been approached by multiple networks for a feature, movie rights and pilot show. It is her dream that no teen should ever be without a safe home or a family. Excerpt from the book: It was 2am. I heard a noise in the hall bathroom. Unaware of what is happening, I avoided turning on the light. As I reached the bathroom, Rita came into view. Her body was drenched with sweat; her hair was pressed against her face. Screaming and banging her head against the wall with an intensity that it hurt me to witness, I rushed to her. When she saw me she screamed out, “WHY?!!!! Why did my mother leave me? Those men hurt me! I don’t want to sleep! They’re here again! I fucking hate myself!” She slammed her head against the wall over and over again. All of a sudden I am twelve again. I am in the bathroom; my dad is at the door. “I fucking hate you! I hate you God!” My head hits the wall over and over and over again…. Bang! Bang! Bang! I am shaking. Having processed no thought of what to do next, I am catapulted back into the bathroom with Rita. Do not turn on the light, scary…no light…Talk quietly…No big noises…quiet voices…Do not touch…Touch is scary… I quietly whisper into the darkness. “I am here with you sweetie…it is okay now…the bad man is gone… We are on the other side now…no more hurt honey…no more bad people here…Please don’t hurt Rita anymore…” The creaking of a door behind me interrupted the intensity of the moment. My eyes now adjusted, I turned my head. I see Mary quietly tiptoeing from her room. Her large eyes tell me she is scared. I put my finger over my lips as if to say, shhhh. Now Yvette is coming. Quietly they collapse to the floor, falling into the darkness by Rita. The only sound is Rita’s heavy rhythmic, breathing. She is rocking back and forth slowly with her arms wrapped tightly around her legs and her head tucked between her knees. The girls gently put their hands on Rita and they too begin to cry. They are hugging each other. Rita lets out a soft cry and hugs them in return. Although the small room still remained dark, the light in the room that night was undeniably brilliant as we walked together out of the darkness. Wiping the tears from Rita’s face, we all stood up together and walked downstairs. Although I don’t normally encourage smoking, this is one night I would let the mountains be mountains and the little things lie. As they sat in the garage, passing the cigarette around with their wet faces, I closed my eyes and thanked God. Thank you God for letting me be twelve again, thank you God for my father. Thank you for my little bathroom so long ago, for it is in the pain of my childhood that I have been blessed with the power to take the hand of a child who is in the darkness; and lead them out. Thank you for having me go before them and showing me the way out…

Waln K. Brown was born in York, Pennsylvania, October, 1944, a "surprise" child of ill-matched parents who did the "right thing" and got married. For the next 11 years, they fought constantly, creating an unhealthy environment that adversely affected Waln emotionally and behaviorally. Rejected by his father for "ruining his life," and confused by his mother's obsessive-compulsive disorder of washing him in her "crazy clean" solution of Lysol and ammonia, Waln began a pattern of acting out that led to placement in an orphanage, juvenile detention home, state psychiatric hospital and juvenile reform school. A terrible student who spent eighth grade in special education and failed the ninth grade, Waln earned an A.S. degree from York College of Pennsylvania, B.S. from the Pennsylvania State University (summa cum laude) and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He held positions with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the National Center for Juvenile Justice and the Orthogenic School at the University of Chicago. Waln is the CEO of the William Gladden Foundation, and the author of over 230 books, scholarly articles and popular publications about youth and family issues.
