Preserved Ginger by Barry Johnstone Preserved Ginger by Barry Johnstone Jan. 31, 2012 $4.99 65157 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
I got divorced from my first wife, (Sheila) in 1986, who then (sadly) died on July the 28th, 008.I got married again in 1993. My daughter Emily died on September 11th 1998 (there is absolutely nothing in the human experience that messes up your head more than loosing a child!) which is why I have complete sympathy for people trying to live in places like Iraq or Iran etc. As if loosing Emily wasn’t enough, my step-daughter Lauren died May 10th 2009! The only thing positive about these awful and tragic events is that ones attitudes are sharpened, re-defined and made more definite. Not necessarily militant, abrasive and opiniated! I’ve now retired from the NZSO (September 2007) and after 40 years of playing the double-bass sitting in front of the loudest trombone section in the known universe - no longer play anything! Through-out my career in the NZSO, I have composed music. Now that I have retired, I can devote more time to this addictive and challenging pursuit (an activity that gives me great pleasure) and this does NOT mean that what I compose is of any great shakes. I write music only for the sheer hell of it, and generally only for me. I have not formally studied i.e. counter-point or anything, so what I write tends to be quite vertical and quite boring, however, like anything else, it’s much easier to judge on what it isn’t, rather than what it is. The other thing is that I don’t actually care what is thought of any music that I may compose, because I’m only concerned with the very first stage of the process – that of actually writing it! (I have to reiterate – I’m only writing for me) If it’s any good – fine. If it isn’t any good – equally fine!

Author bio:
Dennis Powers started writing in the seventh grade, when his first poem, “Nature’s Sculptor,” was published. His life since then has been devoted to writing, adventure, and the outdoors, although taking a few detours to earn his living. After earning a B.A., J.D., and M.B.A., he first worked for large corporations in financial areas, while he dreamed about another life. Establishing a law practice on the California coast in Santa Barbara, he was a single dad, and began writing poetry, newspaper and magazine articles, fiction, and nonfiction books, earning his keep during the day while writing at night. Deciding that teaching would give him more time to write, he joined the faculty at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon, to teach business law for nearly fifteen years and recently retired. His non-fiction book, “The Office Romance,” was his publisher’s lead book and he was on a national book tour. After writing ten nonfiction books, Dennis has returned to his first love, which is writing fiction—including a few that came to the proverbial “close, but no cigar” to being published by New York City publishers. He also writes for regional public radio with over 100 stories aired over the last few years. Whether fishing for salmon, white-water kayaking, or wilderness hiking, his interests are with the outdoors—and his writing. Dennis resides in Southern Oregon, with his wife Judy, two cats and libraries of books. Having adventure traveled to over 75 countries, he journeyed to Costa Rica four times, the setting for his fictionalized adventure piece, “The Gold Bugs” at Smashwords.

The Pinball Theory by Howard McKay The Pinball Theory by Howard McKay June 22, 2011 $2.99 134265 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
Howard McKay was born into a comfortable middle class family in Derby in 1946, the austere post WW2 years. At the age of five he moved to Manchester where his father had secured a new job. At the age of twelve his life received a major jolt when his father was sent to jail. Life on the financial front became very tough. Despite many difficulties, Howard gained a place at Newcastle upon Tyne in an era when universities took only 5% of his peer group. His parents divorced and if all that was not sufficient, at the end of his first university year he was told that his father had committed suicide. According to modern convention, Howard McKay should have been a dysfunctional failure. Marrying soon after university and becoming a father at the age of twenty three, life remained austere. For five years Howard McKay worked as a mining engineer with the National Coal Board before moving to work on an underground railway project in Liverpool. Then came the major life changing move to Hong Kong where he would remain for the next 27 years working mostly on rail infrastructure projects until finally retiring in 2002. In Hong Kong, Howard McKay suffered another set-back when he found that his university girlfriend and now wife, was having an affair with an airline pilot. An acrimonious divorce followed, however his new life as a single man would lead on to much fun and adventure, not to mention a money making business. Howard had been given a guitar at the age of eleven as a reward for passing the entrance exam to Grammar School. He soon became an adept player and this, coupled with his singing talent led on to regular gigs at pubs and social events in Hong Kong. Seeing the popularity of live music performances, Howard then opened his own bar in 1985 and, since then, has opened seven more venues. Sport has always been a major part of Howard McKay’s life and, besides running, squash and football, he had a long spell in off-road motorcycle competition. He also took part in the more unusual sports of Dragon Boat racing, Rickshaw racing, Sedan Chair racing and Pedal Car racing. He has been a member of the Hash House Harriers for 32 years. He re-married in 1997 and now lives with his Filipina wife, Lisa, in the Philippines.

Dirty Poole: A Sensual Memoir by Wakefield Poole Dirty Poole: A Sensual Memoir by Wakefield Poole April 23, 2011 $7.99 103322 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
Wakefield Poole (born 1936) is best known for his classy, visionary hardcore gay erotic films Boys in the Sand (1971) and Bijou (1972), which started the "porno chic" trend a year before Deep Throat was released. Few people know that Poole was a member of the corps de ballet in the waning years of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and then went on to a successful career as a dancer, choreographer, and director on TV, Broadway, and the West End, working with theater legends Stephen Sondheim, Richard Rodgers, Noel Coward, Jerome Robbins, Ethel Merman, Gwen Verdon, and many more. In 1971, after seeing a typical example of gay porn, Poole asked himself why someone couldn't make one that wasn't sleazy and depressing. Then he set out to do just that. With a wind-up 16mm camera and the barely known actor Cal Culver (who took the name Casey Donovan), Poole and a small group of friends shot Boys in the Sand over several weekends in the Fire Island Pines, off the coast of Long Island. He released the film as if it were a legitimate mainstream movie, putting his own name above the title, doing press screenings, and advertising in the New York Times. Overnight, Boys in the Sand became an enormous financial success and Poole's theater career abruptly ended. He followed Boys in the Sand with the ambitious and technically dazzling film Bijou, which was also a hit with audiences and critics. Giddy with success, Poole put all his money into a project that he hoped would be his mainstream calling card, a nudity-filled straight version of Bible stories re-imagined from the woman's point of view. Visually sumptuous and unlike anything else film goers in the early 1970s had ever seen, Wakefield Poole's Bible was a flop—-rejected by both gay and straight audiences. In 1974, Poole left New York for the burgeoning gay mecca of San Francisco. He co-owned and operated the influential retail store/gallery/hair salon Hot Flash of America, was friends with Harvey Milk, and continued to make unique and successful erotic films, until he began a downward spiral into drug addiction. After a cocaine-fueled attempt at a Broadway comeback, Poole bottomed out, went cold turkey, and cleaned himself up. He eventually graduated from the French Culinary Institute at age 50 and became a successful corporate chef. He retired in 2003 and now lives a quiet life in northern Florida. He published his autobiography, Dirty Poole, in 2000, and it will be re-issued in a new edition in 2011. Poole has also appeared in a number of documentaries, including Ballet Russe, When Ocean Meets Sky, and That Man: Peter Berlin.

Upon spending $10,000.00 and seeing no fortune in sight, I founded my own company in 1972. This company was Jasper Janitorial Services which transformed approximately 15 years thereafter into C/F Janitorial Services. The latter specializes in the restoration (in other words-stripping and waxing)and maintenance of resilient tile flooring. ( the kind of flooring you see in most grocery stores and drug stores). C/F is a small company having only one employee. The following may sound self-serving, but I recently retired from C/F to devote the majority of my time to writing. In view of my lack of knowledge and the access others had to information in this field I began writing in 1996. My research was rather comprehensive and I finally introduced “Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Resilient Tile, But Were Afraid To Ask”. I have self published this work and have sold about 2 dozen copies. Needless to say, the effort on my first work got me “hooked” on writing. Writing is hard work, but I love it. I have written columns for local newspapers, The Forsyth County News, The Forsyth County Forum , and the North Georgia Star. The latter of which I became a columnist. I attend church . (my wife calls me a CE special)!! She sees me attend only on Christmas and Easter. I am married ( 49 years ) and have two great daughters who have given us three wonderful grandchildren. My interests other than writing are 1) inventing stuff for which I have been issued 5 patents 2) collecting VHS videos of which I have approximately 900 3) reading and 4) playing the drums. Although I am a party of one which thinks I am the greatest author in existence, the reality is that I try to be as good a writer as possible.

Growing up in the multi-cultural "melting pot" of Minnesota gave me a great appreciation for the different viewpoints of other ethnic groups. What I didn't acquire until much later was an appreciation for my own "faith" heritage. Having managed several bookstores for a number of years gave me a great opportunity to see the impact that books can have on a person's life. It also gave me an itch to write. Meeting authors such as Bodie Thoene at the annual Christian Bookseller's Convention made writing seem, somehow, more accessible. In the mid 1990's I began gathering information on my family tree. Amazingly, I soon had thousands of individuals in the database, all related to me somehow. Many of the lists came from other relatives who also had begun the same quest to gather their family trees. Discussing this intriguing finding with my boss on one occasion, he suggested I write a book about the family heritage I was beginning to discover. That lead to the "small" project of writing a 10-15 page story of our family which quickly became a research project of its own. You are looking at the 3rd revision of that project. I am currently in the process of writing a novel built around the early period of our family history, using fictitious characters but attempting to assemble the real living conditions and environment they lived in. The outcome I hope will be an insightful journey into the world they lived in. I will post more information about forthcoming books on my website as it develops. Stay tuned.

I write a mix of books: novels, biography, short nonfiction. I set my novels in Toronto, my home for most of my life, a city of contradictions and ripe with conflict possibilities. My debut book, LIFELINER, is set in Ontario, but also travels down to New York and across the pond to Sweden. My life is one big question mark, has been ever since I sustained a closed head injury (or mild traumatic brain injury or concussion, whichever moniker is fashionable) in a four-car collision. But my writing keeps me grounded, my photography takes me to other places. When I'm not writing, reading, taking photographs, I'm hunting for good coffee and sensational chocolate.
