It is not the outward appearance that makes a man a man, but the things deep within that one can not see with the naked eye. However, with the passage of time those things not seen will be found in their deeds. One should not prejudge, categorize, label, make up ones mind, or conclude anything about anyone before getting to know what that person is bringing to the table. Inside is information about individuals that would have never made it without self confidence and the belief in themselves, no matter what was said about them, or their race. We all can succeed if we persevere to always do better. This book is dedicated to my son Armani LaCorbiniere, may you meet a better world as you walk into manhood.

Writer's Companion by Carlos Cortes & Renée Miller Writer's Companion by Carlos Cortes & Renée Miller Sep. 28, 2011 $14.99 246233 words Sample 5%
Author bio:
Renée Miller Growing up in Tweed, Ontario—the summer home of Elvis’s ghost—Renée Miller learned early that in a small town, only dreams escape the neighbors’ inquest. So, she dreamed, tasted adventure through books, and created wonderful hidden worlds in her childhood stories. One day, she discovered a little book titled “IT” by Stephen King and writing became her passion. Before losing whatever little common sense she had left, Renée worked as a bartender, waitress, convenience store clerk, gas station attendant, office administrator, lumber yard inventory control something-or-other, coffee-slugging drive-thru grunt, and day-care provider. When the excitement of that daily grind proved too much, she opted out of one asylum and jumped into another: she became a professional writer. Renee now freelances to pay the bills and has published short fiction and hundreds of articles including, but not limited to, how to install vinyl tile and the seven taxonomies of the kingdom of roses. Still residing in Tweed, she lives the glamorous life of a Canadian housewife and underpaid scribe with her three children and a man who has stopped pretending to know what’s going on. Carlos J Cortes Born in Madrid, Spain, Carlos J Cortes grew up on the streets. Over the years he’s worked as an altar boy, musician, waiter, lightning rod installer, site engineer, salesman, dishwasher, night porter, and sundry other high-level executive jobs. Eventually, he settled down as a design engineer specialized in high-level lighting and remote sourcing. But the fun didn’t stop there. His hearing is impaired from being near a bomb at too close quarters; he spent a stretch in an African jail, crossed the Israeli-Egyptian border inside the trunk of a car, and in lean times drove a taxi in Rio de Janeiro. As a consultant on civil and military installations, he has traveled the five continents and written seven texts on lighting, light physics and fiber optics systems. At present, as Chief Technical Officer, he leads the R&D division of a Norwegian group of hi-tech companies, and lives in Barcelona, Spain. A competition bridge player, Carlos has co-authored three books on different aspects of the game. His published fiction includes “Perfect Circle,” now in its second printing, “The Prisoner,” nominated in 2010 for the Philip K. Dick award—both with Random House—and “Ménage à 20,” with Renée Miller and a bunch of talented mongrel writers. His favorite book is Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, which taught him that a life without dreams is only existence.

Along the way he has developed his own philosophies and has views that exhibit original thinking. OTHER THINGS HE HAS DONE Sailed my small boat thru the very eye of a tropical cyclone and lived to tell. Hit a reef, wrecked my boat and was castaway alone on Orchilla Isle in the Caribbean to live like Robinson Crusoe. and lived to tell Looked into the barrel of a PLO gun with the terrorists screaming at me in some language and lived to tell Looked into the barrel of an Israel machine gun while being screamed at in some language and lived to tell Had a beer in the Beirut yacht club while the Israelis rocketed and bombed with everything they had and lived. Sailed up to and anchored at Pirate Island in the Southern Philippines and shared a bottle of rum with the pirates and lived to tell Got caught smuggling in Panama and then had to drink the customs officer under the table. After which we altered the paperwork and were friends and stayed out of jail Escaped from the immigration police in Indonesia by stealing a speed boat and pulling Wallaby Creek thru the reef Drilled out my own tooth with tools from the tool box. Circumnavigated Australia and twice around the world. Found a Polynesian tribe that is still living an uncivilized life and has never been visited by a tourist. Been becalmed for 3 weeks under the tropical sun and at the end had counted out our last meals. Found a cave in PNG with dozens of human skeletons from people who entered the cave in order to die. Fathered a beautiful baby with a young Swiss girl and married her even though she is 25 years younger and also younger then 2 of my other children. Survived three shark attacks where the sharks ripped my spear and fish from my hands. I continue to spearfish at every opportunity. Spent months alone at sea in a leaky boat with no motor and no electrical or electronic thing on the boat. Left a crewman with a primitive tribe in PNG and returned a year later to look for him. Received a message in a bottle. Crossed the jungles of the Western Province of PNG where no white man had been for 20 years. Did a seven-week single-handed passage from Panama to Tahiti. And didn’t end up much crazier.

A Dictionary of English and Romance Languages Equivalent Proverbs by Teodor Flonta A Dictionary of English and Romance Languages Equivalent Proverbs by Teodor Flonta Jan. 07, 2012 $9.99 176624 words Sample 10%
Author bio:
I grew up in a little village in Transylvania listening to stories which were often sprinkled with proverbs and idioms. My father would frequently make use of proverbs, more so when hardships imposed on him by the Communist regime reached unbearable heights. Not being allowed to study Commerce (Foreign Trade), on the account of my ‘unhealty social origin’, I went on to study foreign languages and discovered that my father’s proverbs had equivalents in many of them. As a student I used to pair and memorize them and that helped me improve my vocabulary and reinforce the basic linguistic structures of the language I studied at the time. By a fortunate set of circumstances I was able to leave Communism behind and lived in Italy for a few years. In 1978 I settled in Australia where I got a PhD on a topic close to my heart – have a guess! – yes… proverbs… and found myself teaching in a university. In 1995, with contributions from many academics from around the world – the first among them Prof. Wolfgang Mieder, the top scholar in the field – I founded De Proverbio (www.deproverbio.com), the world's first multilingual electronic journal of proverb studies. Issues of De Proverbio can be found in many ebook stores. So, it seems, that my involvement with proverbs is never going to stop. I have just published some of my bilingual and multilingual dictionaries in digital form and there are more to come. Having lived for long periods of time in three countries, I have had many jobs. In Romania I was a Teacher in a Middle School at the tender age of 17 years and 8 months (yes, as the Communists had dispensed with many teachers and professionals of the old guard – considered enemies – they ran short of people in the professions and therefore were compelled to use High School leavers like me), a Translator, a Radio Announcer in Italian at Radio Bucharest International; in Italy I started as a Translator in a Patent Office, then moved on to become a Personnel Officer and later an Accountant in a Construction Company; in Australia I was more lucky, as I started with being a student and a University Tutor at the same time, then moved on to head the Italian section at the University of Tasmania. Now I am retired and live in the beautiful island of Tasmania with my Italian wife Ariella. Our two sons and their families live close by. When I am not spending time with my cute and vivacious grandchildren, I keep busy working on a series of memoirs. The first, which is now completed and will be published soon, is about my early years in Lupoaia (literal translation: ‘Valley of the Wolves’), my little Transylvanian village. The memoir’s title is ‘A Luminous Future’.

Author bio:
Reza Mashayekhi was born and reared in Tehran, Iran. He later attended the University of Michigan, where he received a degree in aerospace engineering. Reza has always been interested in learning the intricacies of the English language. This is why, alongside of his engineering work, he has taught English to non-English speakers. He has done this because he has wanted to expand his knowledge of English, and he has a good explanation for his reasoning. “When you want to learn a subject, you approach it from your own perspective,” he says. “Once you feel that you know enough about it, you typically move on to something else. When you teach a subject, however, you have to learn everything about it before you can satisfactorily answer all of the questions that are raised by the students.” Reza also consults with non-English speakers to prepare them for their public speaking events, or to help with their day-to-day conversational skills, both in the form of workshops and on a one-on-one basis. Being a non-native speaker of English, living and working in the U.S., Reza’s experience through the years and his interactions with his students and clients has led to the compilation of this book.
