THE BIOGRAPHIES

Leo III

Leo III was indeed a pope and a saint. He was born in 750 and lived until June 12 816. He began to be a pope at 795 and was such until his dead. He was often found to be the enemy of Rome. He was protected by the Romans by Charlemagne, and from there he was crowned as a Roman emperor.

Leo came from a very modest background. He was then suddenly given rise in the hierarchy of Rome and then elected to be the Pope after the death and the burial of his predecessor who was Pope Adrian I. The pope before him had worked hard in order to ensure that there were good relations between Rome and the Frankish Empire. Leo announced that at his win of the election he was given the keys of Saint Peter's tomb as well as the banner of Rome.

This sudden raise in status angered many of Rome's nobility. They saw the win as an insult, and during Leo III's reign he was considered to be guilt of adultery and perjury. In 799 in the April season the pope was openly attacked by a Roman gang who wanted to gouge out his eyes and cut off his tongue. He was attacked with such clumsiness that he was allowed to be saved by Magnus Forteman and seven-hundred Frisian nobles which were members of his army. He want then put in a monastery, but he escaped and fled to Charlemagne.

Charlemagne escorted Leo back to Rome and in November 800 he arrived. In December that same year he held a council and was represented on both sides. Then Leo took an oath of purgation and his opponents were then sent into exile. Two days after he was given the crown of the Roman emperor. It was done on Christmas day.
