My Friend’s Skin

Accepting and Appreciating

Diversity

by

Yvonne Perry

“Let’s go swimming!” Von-Von said one

sunny summer morning.

“I love to go

swimming,” said

Sidney as he ran

for the door.

“WAIT! You have to put on sunscreen!”

Von-Von called to him.

“Why do we always

have to wear lotion to

the beach?” he asked.

“The sun’s rays are hot,” Von-Von

explained as she rubbed lotion all over

Sidney’s body. “We wear sunscreen to

protect our skin from burning.”

Von-Von and Sidney put on their hats and

flip-flops and Von-Von carried the cooler

with a lunch she had made.

It was a short ride to the public beach

where Sidney and Von-Von found a place

near the water to spread their blanket and

raise an umbrella.

After splashing in the water for a while,

Von-Von called Sidney to come out of the

water. “I would like for you to put on a

shirt. Your skin is starting to turn red.”

“I want to get brown skin like my friend,

Bree. I love Bree and she loves me. We

are going to get married when we get

tall enough.”

“That is fine, little guy, but you will not

get as brown as Bree. She is African-

American,” explained Von-Von.

“What does that mean?”

“That means she is of another race.

You are Caucasian and you have light

skin. She is African-American and she

has brown skin. Now please put on this

shirt.”

Sid put on his shirt and said, “I’m

ready to swim again.”

Von-Von helped him get his swim ring

over his head and went back to play in

the shallow water.
