Von-Von was picking up bottles, cans, and trash in

the front yard one morning when three-year-old Sid

arrived.

“Who did that mess?” asked Sidney.

“I don’t know who littered, but it’s not only ugly,” she

said, “it’s unsafe.”

“Look, Von-Von!” said Sidney. “There’s litter in

everyone’s yard.”

“Yes, and Mrs. Jones is not able to pick up the trash

in her yard. I’ll clean her yard when I’m done here.”

“I’ll help you!” said Sid.

“Okay, but let me pick up the sharp glass. You collect

the paper and cans.”

“What are we going to do with this stuff?” Sid asked,

looking at the bags they had filled.

“We can take the glass bottles, newspaper, and metal

cans to the recycling center and get money for

them.”

“Money?” Sid perked up. He liked to earn money.

“People can get money for things they don’t want?”

“Yes, indeed.”

Later that day at the recycling center, Von-Von said

to Sidney, “Now we get to play a sorting game.

Glass goes in this bin.” She put a green bottle in the

bin. “Cans go in this one, and newspaper goes in

this one.”

Sid was a great helper, so Von-Von gave him all the

money they made on the items.
