Things New, Learning About Recycling
the
front yard one morning when three-year-old Sid
arrived.
“Who
did that
mess?” asked Sidney.
“I
don’t know who littered, but it’s not only ugly,” she
said,
“it’s unsafe.”
“Look,
Von-Von!” said Sidney. “There’s litter in
everyone’s
yard.”
“Yes,
and Mrs. Jones is not able to pick up the trash
in
her yard. I’ll clean her yard when I’m done here.”
“I’ll
help you!” said Sid.
“Okay,
but let me pick up the sharp glass. You collect
the
paper and cans.”
Von-Von
was picking up bottles, cans, and trash in

looking
at the bags they had filled.
“We
can take the glass bottles, newspaper, and metal
cans
to the recycling center and get money for
them.”
“Money?”
Sid perked up. He liked to earn money.
“People
can get money for things they don’t want?”
“Yes,
indeed.”
“What
are we going to do with this stuff?” Sid asked,
to
Sidney, “Now we get to play a sorting game.
Glass
goes in this bin.” She put a green bottle in the
bin.
“Cans go in this one, and newspaper goes in
this
one.”
Sid
was a great helper, so Von-Von gave him all the
money
they made on the items.

that day at the recycling center, Von-Von said
